Expressive contemporary and modern movement for ages 8 to 17.

For dancers who love to move with feeling, our modern dance classes in Seattle offer room to explore. Taught through our Youth Contemporary classes at our Lake City studio in NE Seattle, this expressive, grounded style helps dancers ages 8 to 17 connect technique to emotion and find their own voice in movement.

Beginners are genuinely welcome — no experience needed. It's a warm, encouraging space where trying something new is the whole point.

And like every style at Productions, modern leads to the stage. Dancers bring their contemporary work to life in our Winter Holiday Show and Spring Production, growing from dancer to performer along the way.

What Is It?

Modern and contemporary dance is all about expression — grounded, flowing movement that lets dancers explore weight, breath, and emotion in a way classical styles don't always allow. It builds strength, control, and a deep connection between music and feeling, giving dancers freedom to interpret and create. For many students it's where technique and artistry finally come together.

At Productions, contemporary and modern movement lives within our Youth Contemporary classes for dancers roughly ages 8 through 17. It's an emerging part of our program, so classes stay focused and personal, with room for each dancer to develop their own voice. Grounded in the same strong technique we teach across styles, contemporary offers an expressive, welcoming outlet for dancers who love to move with meaning.

Levels & Progression

Modern and contemporary dance at Productions is offered through our Youth Contemporary classes, an emerging area of our program. Dancers get a focused, expressive entry point:

  • Youth Contemporary — the home for modern and contemporary technique (ages ~8–17), building grounded, expressive movement and artistry.
  • Youth Contemporary + Acro Combo — for dancers who want to blend expressive choreography with acro skills.

As this genre grows, dancers deepen their technique and expression over time; a foundation in ballet or jazz strengthens contemporary work.

What to Wear

  • Hair: Pulled back and secured away from the face.
  • Attire: Fitted dance clothing you can move freely in — a leotard or snug shorts and top.
  • Shoes: Bare feet for modern and contemporary work.
  • Jewelry: Small stud earrings only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these little dancers perform?

Yes! Even our youngest students get to take part in our shows. Every class at Productions feeds into a performance, so little ones can experience the magic of the stage.

Creative Movement

My child has never danced before — is that okay?

Perfectly okay. Creative movement is a play-based, no-pressure introduction to dance designed for total beginners. It's all about fun, imagination, and building confidence.

Creative Movement

What should my child wear? (creative movement)

Comfortable clothes they can move in (no jeans or long dresses), hair pulled back, and no street shoes on the floor. Bare feet, ballet shoes, or jazz shoes all work.

Creative Movement

Does a parent stay in the class?

In our Buddy and Me Dance class, yes — a caregiver dances alongside the child. Preschool and mini combos are a gentle first solo experience where children dance on their own.

Creative Movement

What age is creative movement for?

These classes serve our youngest dancers, roughly ages 1.5 through 6. Buddy and Me Dance is for caregivers with children ages 1.5 to 3, and preschool/mini combos welcome children around ages 3 to 6.

Creative Movement

Will hip hop dancers perform?

Definitely. Hip hop classes feed our Winter Holiday Show and Spring Production, so dancers get a real stage to bring their energy.

Hip-Hop

Does the class cover more than just choreography?

Yes. Our hip hop classes introduce the styles, history, and origins of the form, and older dancers get an introduction to breaking.

Hip-Hop

What shoes should my dancer wear? (hip hop)

Clean sneakers or high tops worn only inside the studio — not the shoes they wore in from the street. Keep hair secured and skip jeans or long dresses.

Hip-Hop

Does my child need experience? (hip hop)

No experience needed. Our hip hop classes welcome beginners and build coordination, rhythm, and confidence step by step.

Hip-Hop

What age can my child start hip hop?

Hip hop starts around age 5 with our Mini Bop class, then continues through Youth Hip Hop and Jr/Teen Hip Hop for older kids and teens.

Hip-Hop

Will my child perform? (musical theatre)

Yes! Musical theatre ties directly into our productions, and dancers perform in the Winter Holiday Show and Spring Production. We also run a Musical Theater intensive each summer.

Musical Theatre

What should my dancer wear? (musical theatre)

Comfortable clothes they can move in, hair pulled back, and no street shoes on the floor. Jazz shoes or clean indoor dance shoes are a good default.

Musical Theatre

Does my child need singing or dance experience?

No experience needed. Classes are built to introduce all three skills — dance, acting, and singing — at an age-appropriate pace.

Musical Theatre

What age can my child start musical theatre?

We start little performers around age 4 in Mini Music, then continue through Youth and Jr/Teen Musical Theatre Song and Dance classes up to age 17.

Musical Theatre

What does a musical theatre class include?

Musical theatre blends dance, acting, and singing, so dancers learn to tell a story on stage. Our classes build performance confidence and teamwork in a fun, supportive setting.

Musical Theatre

Will contemporary dancers perform?

Yes. Like every class at Productions, contemporary work is choreographed for our Winter Holiday Show and Spring Production.

Modern

What should my dancer wear? (modern)

Fitted dance clothes that move with the body and bare feet. Keep hair secured away from the face.

Modern

What age is contemporary for?

Our Youth Contemporary classes are geared toward dancers roughly ages 8 to 17. It helps to have some prior dance foundation, though motivated beginners are welcome to ask us about fit.

Modern

Acro

What should my dancer wear for acro?

Fitted dance clothes that move with the body — a leotard or snug shorts and top — and bare feet. Avoid baggy clothing, and secure hair away from the face.

Acro

Is acro safe for my child?

Yes. Skills are taught progressively with careful spotting in a structured environment, so dancers build strength and control before advancing to harder tricks.

Acro

What age can my child start acro?

Acro combos begin around age 4 with our Pre-Primary Jazz/Acro and Mini Jazzing/Tumbling classes, and continue up through the teen years in Youth Contemporary plus Acro combos.

Tap

Does my child need experience?

Not at all. Tap Foundations is a true beginner class, and our combos give younger children a gentle, playful first taste of tap.

Tap

What kind of tap shoes does my dancer need?

Any style of tap shoe is welcome. Just make sure hair is secured and ankles are visible so instructors can watch the footwork.

Jazz

How does my dancer work up to pointe?

Girls wear a leotard with pink or nude ballet slippers, plus tights for ages 7 and up; boys wear black tights or pants with a fitted top and ballet slippers. Hair is pulled back in a bun.
